WhoIs is an internet service to find out information about a domain name or IP address.
WhoIs is also known as Public Records for domain names. Anyone can look a domain up in a WHOIS database.
When you look a domain name up in a WhoIs search engine, you'll typically find:
- date of registration
- status of domain
- domain expiration date
- domain registrar
- contact info of the owner (street address, phone number, and email address if no privacy setting is enabled)
- DNS (name servers)
WhoIs can also be used to simply check if a certain domain name is available or if it has already been registered.
