Following are suggestions for getting the most out of Instagram.

Use Hashtags

Hashtags (added to the 'Write a caption...' field) are one of Instagram's main features and help increase the visibility of your posts.

Hashtags are single words or phrases combined into one word.

These tags categorize your photo, allowing other people to find your image when they're looking at that topic.

When you add a hashtag, your image will appear on a page with other images using the same hashtag. People who follow those hashtags will see your image.

You might get followers, likes, and comments from this visibility.

The maximum number allowed is 30.

Hashtag examples:

  • #art
  • #selfportraits
  • #stilllife
  • #stilllifes
  • #stilllifeinoil
  • #landscapes
  • #abstractart
  • #mixedmedia
  • #paintings
  • #fineart
  • #artwork
  • #portraits
  • #oilpaintings
  • #impressionism
  • #watercolorpainting
  • #landscapepainting
  • #workinprogress
  • #pleinairpainting

Here is what a post looks like with the hashtags added:

#boldbrush

We recommend that you include the BoldBrush hashtag: #boldbrush

You can go to the #boldbrush channel and look at the top posts. You can easily see artists who are making the most out of using instagram!

Engagement

A good way to encourage engagement is to follow, like and comment on other's posts. If someone comments on your images, be sure to reply. Instagram uses algorithms so the more engagement on a post, the more visibility it will get.

Stories

In addition to adding images to your Instagram feed, you can also add stories. Stories can be photos or videos and they appear for 24 hours. Click the camera icon in the top left of Instagram. You will see options to select or take a photo, record a video, go live, etc.

Here is a great article we found (by doing a google search) that explains more in depth about Instagram stories:

Instagram Stories: The Complete Guide to Using Stories

Videos

While photos are still the more common format on Instagram, Instagram video is gaining a lot of traction… And not just in terms of popularity.

Engagement numbers for videos are growing at a faster rate than photos.

Video gives you the ability to share complex, in-depth stories that can’t be conveyed in a single image.

WIP Photos

In order to generate more interest in your work on Instagram, people like to see Work In Progress photos. They like to see the artist at work and photos of things that inspire the artist. In other words, they are interested in your story and your life as an artist.
