How To Transfer Your Domain Away from FASO

You can transfer a FASO registered domain to another domain registrar (provider) if the domain is at least 60 days old or was not transferred to FASO within the last 60 days.

NOTE: This 60-day transfer rule is an international ICANN rule and not something we can change.

The Transfer Away process can take up to 7 business days to complete.

Once the transfer to your chosen registrar is complete, your new registrar will bill you any necessary charges for the domain. Check with your new registrar for their fee schedule.

Instead of transferring your domain to another registrar, you can choose to enroll in our Managed Domain (MD) Plan. We'll continue to manage your domain.

See Managed Domain Plan for more info.

To Transfer Domain Away

  • open a support ticket and notify us of your intention
  • our team will unlock the domain
  • our team will email the transfer security key (Authorization Code / EPP Code) to you at your FASO Admin Email address
(we can NOT send the code to a different email other than the Admin Email)
  • you then start the transfer process with new domain registrar

Make Sure your Admin Email Address is Not the Domain Email

Because the transfer process includes important emails automatically sent to the Admin Email address listed in your account info with both providers (FASO and your new registrar)

  1. you want to make sure that your FASO Admin Email address is listed as a neutral email address (one that is not attached to your domain name | use a gmail.com or yahoo.com email, for example)
See this FAQ: How do I change the email address on my account?
***If you are using the domain email as your FASO Admin Email address, once the domain transfer has been initiated, your email will stop working and you will not get the emails to complete the transfer.
  2. you also want to make sure that you are not using your domain email as the Admin Email with your new registar until AFTER your domain transfer is completed.

These 2 steps will ensure that you receive all the necessary transfer emails.

If You Have an Email Account Attached to the Domain

An email account does not transfer when a domain transfers.
An email account is a separate entity from a domain name.

It is important to understand that if you have an email account attached to the domain that you wish to continue to use and you are using the FASO webmail service and not using an email client (like Outlook, Thunderbird, Windows Live Mail, a built-in Mail App, Apple Mail, etc.) for managing the email account, there is no easy way to transfer saved emails or your list of contacts.

You will need to set up the email account with your new provider BEFORE starting the process of transferring your domain away.

If you have important emails saved in folders at your current email provider you will want to email them to yourself or save them to a file folder on your computer before you change the nameservers on the domain and cancel the email account with FASO.

Any saved emails will then need to be copied or forwarded to the new account once it is up and running.

Contacts will need to exported, then imported to the new service.

Import or export contacts in Rackspace Email

IMPORTANT

When you transfer your domain away from FASO to another registrar (such as GoDaddy), be sure to update all administrative info on the domain account once the transfer is complete.

Remove our info and enter your personal info to prevent future issues.

Your domain is subject to cancellation by ICANN if you fail to update the Contact Info on your domain once it has been transferred away.
